U.S. News & World Report High Performing Hospital
U.S. News & World Report rated Baystate Medical Center as one of an elite group of 34 “high performing” hospitals in a new form of evaluation that rates hospitals on how well they perform in several surgical procedures and chronic conditions. Baystate is only one of three hospitals in New England to be rated as “high performing” in an analysis of 4,600 hospitals nationwide based on three common operations–heart bypass, hip replacement, and knee replacement–and two chronic conditions–congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals
U.S. News & World Report again ranked Baystate Medical Center among the nation’s top hospitals. In the 2015-16 U.S. News rankings, Baystate is nationally ranked in the areas of diabetes and endocrinology as well as ear, nose and throat. Baystate is considered high performing in seven areas of medical specialty: cardiology and heart surgery; gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; geriatrics; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics, and pulmonology. For the third year in a row, Baystate was named among the top three hospitals in Massachusetts.
Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence
In 2015, Baystate Medical Center achieved Magnet hospital designation for nursing excellence for the third time in a row from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Only three percent of hospitals have achieved Magnet three times. Baystate Medical Center was originally designated a Magnet hospital in 2005.
GOLD-Level American Association of Critical-Care Nurses
Beacon Award for Excellence
Baystate Medical Center’s Heart & Vascular Critical Care and Progressive Care Unit achieved a GOLD-level American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Beacon Award for Excellence. The award is based on sustained unit performance and patient outcomes that exceed national benchmarks. They were one of only three units to earn Gold in Massachusetts.
50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital
Baystate Medical Center was named a 2016 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital nationally in the category of teaching hospitals with cardiovascular residency programs. The hospital has been named to this list for six years. The Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study is an annual, objective, quantitative study that identifies the nation’s best providers of cardiovascular care, based on publicly available data and a balanced look at patient outcomes, operational efficiencies, and financial metrics.
Leapfrog Group “A” for Safety
Baystate Medical Center received “A” grades from The Leapfrog Group on the 2015 Hospital Safety Score, which grades hospitals on their overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. The hospital has received a straight “A” for six years consecutively putting Baystate Medical Center in the top three percent of hospitals nationally for consistent scores.

Stroke Gold Plus Award
For the third year in a row, Baystate Franklin Medical Center was honored with the Gold Plus Achievement award from the American Heart/American Stroke Association for ensuring that stroke patients consistently receive treatment according to nationally accepted guidelines. The hospital was also named to the Target: Stroke Honor Roll. Baystate Wing Hospital also earned the Gold Plus Achievement Award and Baystate Medical Center and Baystate Mary Lane Hospital received Silver Plus awards.
